Audi has today revealed details and images for the updated-for-2011 Audi TT. Both the Coupe and Roadster body styles have been given a modest makeover, and the line-up gains a new model powered by Audi’s updated 2.0 litre TFSI four-cylinder petrol engine.
With the use of Audi’s Valvelift system, the updated 2.0 litre TFSI engine produces 157kW (up 10kW on the previous model) and 350Nm of torque (up 70Nm). It is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or, moving up the specs list, Audi’s six-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission mated to the quattro all-wheel-drive system.
The 0-100km/h sprint is covered in 6.1 seconds in the manual-equipped model, and a spritely 5.6 seconds with the S tronic and quattro setup.

Despite the boost in output, fuel consumption for the 2.0 litre TFSI engine is listed at 6.6 l/100km – down from 7.7 l/100km.
On the styling front, the updated TT gets simple tweaks to the front bumper with larger intakes and a single-frame gloss-black grille. As is fast being an Audi trademark, a row of LED daytime-running-lights now features along the bottom edge of the headlights.
At the rear, subtly updated tail lights, larger exhaust tips and an oh-so-slightly larger diffuser round out the updates. Thanks to the tweaks at both ends, the TT is now 2cm longer, measuring 4187mm in length.

The more powerful 2011 Audi TTS variant gets a more obvious update up front, featuring a new grille and front bumper with chrome intake frames. The range-topping TT RS remains unchanged, maintaining Audi’s familiar RS styling.
Updates in the cabin are similarly modest, with a new satin-aluminum look to the steering wheel, centre console and door trim. The glove box gets a brushed aluminium insert, and new interior colour combinations are available for the TT and TTS models.

2011 McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren Press Release

2011 McLaren MP4-12CThe McLaren MP4-12C is revealed as the first in a range of high-performance sports cars from McLaren Automotive, the independent car division based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. The 12C, and future models within the range, will challenge the worlds best sports cars, benefiting from the expertise and virtuosity of the McLaren Group.

Twenty years of sports car design, engineering and production combined with inspirational success in Formula 1 have driven Ron Dennis, McLaren Automotive Chairman, to announce his plans for the ultimate line-up of technology-led and customer-focused performance cars for the 21st century. The rules in the sports car world are about to be re-written.

Through a rich modern history, McLarens automotive division has already built the worlds most critically acclaimed supercar, the McLaren F1 (1993-1998) and the worlds best-selling luxury supercar, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (2003-2009). McLaren Automotive now looks to the future with a new range of revolutionary sports cars.

It is a long-held dream of mine to launch a range of high performance sports cars that set new standards in the industry, said Dennis.

2011 McLaren MP4-12CWe began designing and building cars for aficionados of thoroughbred sports cars almost 20 years ago. Incorporating the leading edge technologies that the McLaren Group has built up within its various companies, I believe we are now perfectly placed to open up this new chapter in McLarens history as well as play a part in the regeneration of high-tech manufacturing in the UK and global automotive environment, he concluded.

At its heart, the McLaren MP4-12C features a revolutionary carbon fibre chassis structure, the Carbon MonoCell: the first time a car in this market segment is based around such a strong and lightweight racing car engineering solution and the first time any car has ever featured a one-piece carbon fibre structure.

This step change in sports car design means that the 12C introduces new standards not just in handling, ride and outright performance, but also safety, economy and practicality in an already competitive sector.

Martin Whitmarsh, Team Principal of McLarens racing team highlighted the integral part that McLarens motorsport and road car experience played in developing the 12C: McLaren has for years offered a potent mix of race car and road car technologies. This combination of McLarens performance heritage, and future demands on what is expected of high performance sports cars in the 21st century, gave us a head-start when we embarked on this project. The 12C, and future variants, draws on the spirit of Formula 1 and delivers real-world technological advances.

2011 McLaren MP4-12CThe first car from the new company, the McLaren MP4-12C, is a high performance two-seat mid-engine model in the core sports car market segment for cars costing between £125,000 and £175,000. The 12C is pure McLaren, featuring no carryover parts from any other car, and will be produced by McLaren in the UK. It goes on sale through a dedicated, worldwide retailer network in early 2011.

McLaren is already a car maker with maturity and experience, having produced iconic cars such as the F1, said Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director.

The next step was to construct a range of pure McLaren high performance sports cars that are true to the company’s philosophy and reflect our position as an absolute technology and performance leader. So, when we embarked on the 12C project, we wanted to re-write the rules of sports car design. Indeed, the 12C offers performance and technology that exceeds that of the worlds most expensive and sophisticated supercars, while competing in a much more accessible market segment. And to achieve this result, we designed every component from scratch to meet the extreme goals of the 12C and avoid any compromise.

Forget what you know about sports car companies, McLaren is different, he concluded.

Ford Shelby GR-1

As one of its most contemporary and dramatic front-engine, two-seat, fastback supercars, this running prototype reaches closer to reality with a 605-horsepower, 390-cubic-inch, all-aluminum V-10 engine, a road-tested version of the Ford GT suspension and a stunning new polished-aluminum body.
Ford took the occasion of the world’s foremost showcase of automotive splendor, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, to unveil the Ford Shelby GR-1 concept, calling the new sports car a salute to “performance art.”
The Ford Shelby GR-1 is a uniquely emotional American sports car design that makes a bold statement about Ford’s performance future.
“The Ford Shelby Cobra concept was a small step in our plans for the Ford GT supercar architecture and our relationship with Carroll Shelby,” says J Mays, Ford Motor Company group vice president of Global Design. “And the Ford Shelby GR-1 is a giant leap toward the future.”
The GR-1 concept takes the performance car genre in a new direction combining modern sculptured surfaces in a sleek muscular fastback design. The result is a forward-looking supercar with attention grabbing Ford presence and Carroll Shelby inspiration.
The Ford Shelby GR-1 is a front-engined, two-seat, fastback supercar that is based on the architecture of the Ford GT.
Ford and Carroll Shelby
More than 42 years after their original agreement to produce performance cars, Ford Motor Company and Carroll Shelby are back together producing production and concept cars. Shelby, a former race car driver and creator of numerous collectable performance cars returned to collaboration with Ford in the design of the 2005 Ford GT, which goes on sale this summer.
Shelby worked closely with the Ford Design team and Advanced Product Creation group to develop the Ford Shelby Cobra concept car. In addition, Shelby will produce a high-performance, limited edition, Shelby Ford Expedition, for sale through select dealers next year.

Racing inspired and wholly modern in design, this show car builds on the success of the Ford Shelby Cobra concept – the 2004 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) “Best in Show” winner – and reinforces Ford’s on-going commitment to performance excellence.
The Ford Shelby GR-1 concept is a sinewy, athletic design with a dramatic front engine proportion. The long hood blends seamlessly into the teardrop-shaped cabin while the dramatic fenders dart rearwards into curvaceous haunches thrusting the car forward and enhancing the aggressive stance and width.
The car looks as if it is in motion, even when standing still. The optimized wheel arches and compact overhangs define the dramatic proportion while the sensual surfaces express the car’s athletic nature. A chiseled physique is achieved with sheer and full surfaces working together, interfacing one another in harmonious lines such as the strong shoulder line orbiting the car’s form.
The front of the GR-1 is dominated by an impressive air intake aperture and air flow splitter, directing cooling air into the engine bay and wheel wells, while air vents on the top surface of the hood exhaust hot air from the radiator.
The V10 engine pushes unashamedly upwards into the hood’s surface exposing prominent bulges – a potent reminder of the car’s powerful performance – while air vents at the base of the front screen allow the motor to breathe. Intakes and vents perforate the body side and Kamm tail, further exhausting hot air out of the vehicle.
The front corners of the GR-1 are dominated by the front wheel well and trapezoidal HISS (high intensity solid state) and LED headlamps. The distinctive Kamm tail, a strong concave section, is further defined by the bold vertical tail lights at the rear.
A visor-like side glass graphic gives a hint of the dramatic motion of the butterfly-hinged doors.
The race-inspired, ultimate high performance, Ford Shelby GR-1 is the next chapter in a long line of emotionally-charged Ford supercar concepts.
Building Another Showstopper
Ford worked closely with Carroll Shelby to develop the Ford Shelby Cobra concept for the 2004 North American International Auto Show. The show car was the brainchild of Ford’s Advanced Product Creation Group, engineered in Michigan and designed in California, a partnership which is charged with developing future car concepts and technologies with an eye toward production possibilities. The group used the Ford GT architecture and fully engineered the Ford Shelby Cobra concept. For demonstration purposes, two chassis were ordered for the Cobra concept, but only one show car was built.
Before body panels were even created, the fully-operational running chassis was test-driven at high speeds at Ford’s Dearborn Proving Ground. So pleased were Ford officials with the concept’s chassis that they took the extra demonstration chassis and went to work on another concept before the Ford Shelby Cobra concept was unveiled in January.
The Ford Shelby Cobra and its predecessor, the Ford GT were hits of the two previous North American International Auto Shows. The Ford Design team was challenged to follow-up with another exciting concept.
The Designer
In the Irvine Advanced Design Studio, George Saridakis, a young designer, new to Ford in 2000, was known for his contributions in executing the details of some of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury’s latest production and concept designs.
Saridakis created a sketch that caught the attention of the Irvine team and resonated with Mays.
“George produced this completely resolved sketch – the best I’ve seen in 10 years,” says Mays. “When I saw it, it wasn’t a matter of ‘Let’s do more sketches.’ It was really more of a ‘Let’s get this into clay.’”

Remarkably, only the original sketch of the car, in three perspectives, was created.
“George nailed it in one crack,” Mays opines. “This is a designer so masterful at visualizing every aspect of the car and its story that it literally flowed out of his pen. And because the design is so pure, we really believe this show car will be a hit.”

Ferrari 599 Fiorano HY-KERS Concept

Ferrari 599 Fiorano HY-KERS
Quick, name something the Toyota Prius has in common with Ferrari. Tough one? The answer (as of now) is hybrid drivetrains. Ferrari took the wraps off its new hybrid 599 HY-KERS at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, and it’s as green as Ferrari can make it. Featuring a bit of traditional hybrid tech and a healthy dose of Formula1 witchcraft, Ferrari has manufactured a car that loses none of the dynamic performance of its gas-only brethren.

Ford Fusion

The Fusion’s powertrain lineup has been completely overhauled for 2010 and offers more choices, starting with the four-banger, now enlarged to 2.5 liters from 2.3 and blessed with 15 more hp and 16 additional lb-ft of torque for a total of 175 hp and 172 lb-ft. The manual and automatic transmissions that mate to the four-cylinder each have an additional forward gear this year, too, for a total of six. In spite of its frugal intentions—Ford claims 33 mpg on the highway, but had no figures for city-cycle mpg at the time of this writing—we found the motor to be willing, revvy, and smooth. Ultimate acceleration is on the lazy side of adequate, but the midrange punch is quite satisfying. Ford claims a 0–60 time of 9.5 seconds, but that was the pokey time we recorded in a 2.3-liter car with a five-speed automatic. Additionally, a 2.3-liter Fusion with a five-speed manual was clocked at 8.1 seconds to 60, so we expect the 2010 model to handily outpace Ford’s estimates.
